어느날 존스 폭스 가 사라 애덤즈와 그녀의 누이

엘리자에게 성가 편집을 도와 달라고 했다.

폭스 는 창세기 28장 10-22절에 기록된 야곱과 에서에 관한

자신의 설교에 맞는 성가가 있었으면 좋겠다고 했다.

이 성가는 이 성서 이야기를 주제로 사라 아담즈가 작사한 것이다.

 

이 성가에는 얽힌  일화들이 많이 있다.

미국의 대통령 맥킨리는이 성가를 즐겨 불렀으며,

임종때에도 이 성가를 부르면서 죽었다고 한다.

 

1912년 4월 14일 대서양에서 침몰한 "타이타닉(Titanic) 호"에서

1,635명의 승객들이 죽어가면서 이 성가를 불렀으며

악단도 배가 침몰하는 마지막 순간까지 이 성가를 연주했다고 한다.
